Some say that you have to get primer on within 7 hours?

could I strip my shell and then put a cover on it till it gets to the spray shop? which may take 2 weeks?

In this climate, you'll get oxidising on the surface very soon after.

You can get away with it by covering it with clingfilm, and it does work!!

when i did mine i bare metaled it then sprayed it with Upol etch -primer

as said above - spray it with etch primer almost straight away.
Otherwise you'll end up with water blisters under the new paint
