My car runs like a bag of spanners sometimes, when cold. Runs fine when its warmed up. If I'd had this problem in mid winter, I'd have thought "Carb Icing".

However since that's no longer possible, I'm beginning to suspect the auto choke is at fault. How do I:

A ) Check it's functioning (so I can rule out electrical failure)

B ) Adjust it (and what should it be set to ideally?)

Oh and by the way the engine is a '72 1300 with the standard carb

It could still well be carb icing. Doesn't just happen in the winter. Do your heat-riser tubes on the inlet manifold get warm when the engine has been running a while?
