Got a 71 bay with gear problems. I have fitted a quickshift block and new selector plate and rear coupling but I am still having trouble. I can get all gears going up but can't get 3rd from 4th I have to go to 2nd with clutch down and then to 3rd. Is this just poor slector plate adjustment or something altogether more horrible?

have you replaced the front shift rod bushing? these are a sure fire way to get sloppy shifting and are often knackered or missing entirely!

front shift rod bushing? Where is that? can you post a pic/link or describe more clearly please as I'm a gearbox newb :?

Pinched from the vw heritage website (this is for a beetle but its the same idea in a van)
The front shift rod bush / sleeve is part No. 17 on this diagram

there is a bracket with a hole in it which supports the shift rod, the bush stops the shift rod slopping around. if the bush is missing or worn it can make shifting very inaccurate.

you can see this little arrangement if you remove the shifter and look through the hole or from underneath the van by removing the front belly pan (big flat sheet of steel bolted to the underside of the van - often missing).

the bush and bracket is just forward of the shifter in a van (if i remember correctly).

yes i meant part 11! and yep the bush fits over the rod between the rod and the bracket (on the van not shown in the diagram).

Right this is where I am to date!

Changed the little bush (part 11 in pic) and put everything back together. Still no good! :(

Fitted a EMPI quickshifter as kindly lent me by fellow club member and it's better as in i can change to 3rd from 4th but it wants to go into reverse instead of second without pulling the trigger :(

And first is a bitch to find also :(

Anyone have any other ideas as I'm getting a bit hacked off as I need this running right as I'm going away in it soon! :(
