Type 4 flywheel bolts keep shearing

My type four (in a splitty ) has sheared all it`s flywheel bolts for the second time!!!!!!!!!!!! It happened the first time and I put it down to using the old bolts, so I replaced them with new 914 flywheel bolts (longer & better) and after five minutes of running these sheared aswell!!!!! I`m running 135 bhp at the crank and the 210mm flywheel was machined on a lathe to accept the gland bearing that was removed from the end of the crankshaft. Any ideas as to why this keeps happening would be greatly appreciated

doubt it's got anything to do with it but did you fit a new bearing or the one that you pulled out of the crank? only thing i can think of is that something isn't sitting quite right.

have a word in the type fourum on shoptalkforums and see if anyone has experienced the same prob.

I removed the old bearing from the crank and used a new one in the flywheel which was machined on a lathe then the bearing was press fitted with a hand press. I will post on the type fourem and see what response I get from there . Cheers Glyn

sounds fine then, i'm just thinking along the lines of something is not matching up correctly and the whole thing isn't tightening up properly.

No gearbox is sound . I`ve reinserted the 1641 type 1 engine and after some dub doktoring on the carbs runs great. I do admit though it sounds as though there is a lining up issue. I think the fly wheel shall need to be checked

It`s starting to look as though the longer bolts i was sold are no good for my set up and are bottoming out on the bolt holes . I`m now in the process of finding some standard ones

thats a pain but didn;t the stock ones you had in the first place also shear off? or maybe you were just unlucky with those old ones.

Glyn i still think you have a weight issue, with no rear engine bar, theres a lot of engine hanging on your beetle gearbox, maybe thats whats making your flywheel and input shaft running out of line, hense making the flywheel bolts shearing,

Could be a combination of all the above! I`ll have to get some new standard bolts and rig up the support bar then try again, AGAIN!!!!!!
