Help and advice on Adapter plates

Hi, ive just bought a 1971 1200 beetle
Its my third bug, the last one was 15 years ago.
I'd like to do something a little different with this one.
I have read it is possible to buy adapter plates that allow you to mate other engines to the beetle gearbox.
I havent decided on an engine type as yet, but would very much like to give this a go.
I realise the purists will be sticking pins in voodoo dolls at the thought of this, but i would like some help and advice from anyone who has been through this process.
I was thinking of maybe an Alfa, or subaru, i dunno really you guys tell me whats been done.
Any help or advice, or links would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
steve

scooby, alfa, golf and mazda rotary are the common ones.

scooby's probably come top of the pile for availabilty of conversion parts off the shelf and power.

there is a complete alfa engine and adaptor setup on ebay at the moment.
