can anyone tell me what this means!?!?

right, found my volt meter so...

when the car isnt running its showing like around 12.7

when the car is running its showing 12.1?????

im sooo confused coz the car got a new battery a few months ago but since then its been run to the farm twice and then they have been starting it up alot so surely if the dynamo wasnt working then it would be showing alot less than 12 volts???

ive got the alternator conversion kit but is it really something i can tackle on my own?

i really dont know what to try next, need to get it up to newcastle at the weekend, my hopes are slowly fading!

suggestions? help? prayers! lol

my msn is

whats the voltage readings on the generator and regulator?

my suspision would be to change the regulator under the back seat for what it costs

also, are those readings once it starts or after the engines been run for a while? i only ask as sometimes the regulator breaks down internally once its been used for a bit.

someone told me it might be the regulator so i picked up a 2nd hand one at dubfreeze, no change.

thats the readings from when its not running and then after its been running for like a minute.

havent done the reading for regulator/dynamo coz i dont really get how to do it to be honest

Were the voltage reading done at engine idle speed ?

If so, you need to rev it a bit to get a proper reading from the dynamo, they can sometimes show nothing when at idle speed

Also, the voltage with the car off can show 12 volts but not have enough current to be able to run stuff.

Best way to check would be with revs at around 2,000 It should show around 13.4V also try with your lights on & see if that makes a difference to the voltage when the engine is running. Dynamo could be working but not quite enough.

Alternator conversion isn't a difficult job to do but it all depends on how good you are at getting your hands dirty

right, went out and revved and stuff and its showing around 11.7

if i switch my head lights on full its showing 11.3

i dont actually need anything running at the mo, well just my lights. just dont know whether to risk driving it 200 miles or not.

when its up there new engine and alternator conversion is going on so hopefully problem should be solved.

will it get there tho? thoughts?

Yep. If you are and have recovery then

If not then I wouldn't risk 200 miles unless you take a few spare batteries lol

I recon you could make it easy in the day (no lights) with a good battery.

Maybe even at night - but I would take a spare and some leads.

50w per headlight = 100w
that is less than 10 amps.

journey - 200m at 50mph = 4 hrs

so you need around 40 amp hours of charge in the battery to make the journey

if you have aa recovery its a no brainer - just do it.

--- I drove my splitty for months not charging. I had a good big battery and charged it once a week - no worries ---
