yep i had one for a while 1.8gti karmann, it was a great motor fast as fook and handled superbly loads of fun!

Need to check out a few things when buying them tho, rust in the usual places and especially the fuel filler neck which deposits bits of rust into the fuel system and can block injectors and knacker fuel pumps and accumaltors.

Mine needed a new filler neck, drain and clean fuel tank, blow through fuel lines, new pump and accumalator and flexy high pressure fuel hoses (vw only part) which you can imagine doesn't come cheap!

Listen out for noisey fuel pump / accumalator (underneath by the drivers rear arch.

hoods are generally very well fitting (mine was never damp inside) but
they are easy to break into! (over its lifetime mine was stolen 4 times!).

Dont get a white one unless your missus is a hairdresser

as above plus

slower than a normal mk1 gti due to the weight but that's not really an issue

engine - also look for valve stem wear - puff of blue smoke when changing gear. bit's are pence but its a bit of a labour intensive job.
Look out for bodged mods such as badly cut airboxes or cut springs to lower it.

body - don't know if the spare is in the recess in the boot like hard top mk1's but if so check under that. rear valance corners, rear arches esp. if covered by a bodykit. sills about 3/4 of the way back and where they meet the rear arch, inner front wings - right down the bottom by the sill where mud gets stuck, front valance, front wings go under the bumper, down by the sills and near the scuttle, check the inside of the bonnet, scuttle panel in the corner of the windows. also check the bulkhead where the clutch cable goes through - sometimes rips the bulkhead and around the shock towers.

bits are pretty cheap tbh from places like gsf, stuff like front wings and rear arches fit pretty well too. If you don't buy one off someone you know I'd get an hpi check done too.

good cars, nice when the suns out and not too impractical in winter. give in a few more weeks and there'll probably be a few up for grabs for good money when the dark nights start

best thing i can recommend with themn is to hpi check before u buy!!!

the guy who had mine contacted me after a while, he had been trying to sell it and someone had done a check, it turned out it had been written off and then repaired - twice!!!!!

be careful wiv these they are prime target for thieves, mine was broken into bout a week before i had it!!! good job it had a cat 1 alarm immobiliser on it!!!

And please remember the hood is electric, so don't undo the clips then try to rip open the frame on your mate's car at a show, then wonder why everyone is screaming at you.

(Not that I've ever done that cos I was used to an MX5!)

Just to echo whats been said already really, they really are a thief's favourite car, we had one and someone attempted to steal it just before we bought it, left big hole in the roof. But if you can afford a stunningly good alarm go for it!!!
