show winners!

when i was at BUSTYPES this year, the creative split won best of show. is this fair?

what i mean by fair is, lets say you had a knackered bus and spent a few years doing it up (on a limited budget), and then went to the show and put it in the show and shine, and your mate had a knackered bus aswell, and sent it to a company to do all the work (with unlimited buget), and he won best of show.

would you feel pissed off by that?

should there be a section in a show and shine for 'manufacturd cars'

that way i think it would be fair to the people who have done the work themselfs.....

I like to see two categories at least in show and shine

"Show cars" which you can generally droll at and wish to own

&

"Daily Drivers" proper used cars which see the roads daily, used in the winter, kept outside etc... cars like this which are tidy i have alot more respect for as there "USED". IMHO at the end of the day i can't see the point in owning a mint bus/bug etc if you don't use it enuff.. and as for trailer queens... don't go there!

Been a big bug bear of mine for years. I remember 6 years ago at Big Bang, the best of show was a Beetle that was rolled off a trailer, and pushed back on, it didn't even have any carb linkage.

As for high budget buses, if people have that money to waste, then fair play, it's better than them snorting it up their nose, but to me, the bus that won, will always be known as the "Creative Engineering bus" as opposed to the guy that owns it, and it's just a mobile advert for their business.

The only problem I have with it (your statement that is!), is that there isn't much difference between 2 show buses if ones been done by a company for Big Bucks and one has been done by the owner using hime time and skill. They are both highly skilled people at the end of the day, and should the Creative Bus be slated just cos the owner didn't build it? It's still been built by some highly skilled craftsman. And what if the bus built by an individual (like my old chop top) gets sold on?
Surely it's the same thing. Although the previous owner has parted with thousands of pounds paying for someone to do it, he's had to part with thousands of hours of his life, restoring the vehicle.

And it's the same as Travis's bug which took Best of Show at Volksworld, the names on the restoration board read pretty much a "who's who" in the VW Business.
Gearbox built by Gog Box
Interior by Bernard Newbury
Paint by Paintbox
Wheels by JGE

etc etc.
No wonder the final bill was in excess of £50K

In a way I agree with what Coxy has said - in that a pro job deserves credit too - but it is unfair because most DIY restorers don't have the resources (time, money, equipment) to compete. So prizes are taken by vehicles that have had cash thrown at them - and the ordinary VW owner doesn't stand a chance.

Garrick's idea of having separate categories seems like a good one. I think it is a shame if the show scene becomes nothing but an elitist display of who has the most money to flash. But then again, it's nice to see what is possible.

This is something that is important to Dubzine - in that we wanted to make it purely for the ordinary DIY VW owner - as the glossy mags are often dominated by Paintbox cars.

Becomes????

The show scene has been an elitist display for people with the most money for years!
Go back to '89 when Thump! Thump! Paintbox and Bernard Newbury were all taking off, and it was their cars that were pulling in all the trophies!
Years later, it's still the same!
Paintbox, Cog Box, Newbury, etc etc
You'll find that apart from the buffers shows like Stanford Hall, at least one car with a trophy will have had something done by these!

I would like to point out that for the last 3 years (and more maybe!) the winner of Best Interior and Best Paint at MAC(H) have not been touched by these guys!
Infact, for 2 years on the trot, the best interior was won by a lad who's girlfriend stitched up the seats! It's nice to see an interior without someone's signature on the seats!

And about the time thing, the DIY restorer does have the time, it just takes a lot longer! How many times have we heard of peope who have done the restoration themselves, taking them over 5 years or more to complete!

Long live rat Look!

cheque book restorations versus diy jobs has been an issue for 20 years in the VW scene to my knowledge.
Just judge each one by there merits.
Someone is always gonna have more money to spend on there ride.
Just enjoy, its not worth dwelling on.

BTW - I am well aware that I am relatively new to all this but in the couple of years I have been going to these shows and seeing the magazines - this is something that I has bugged me (arf). How long it has been going on for is kind of irrelevant. I do think it ruins it for people who would otherwise be rewarded for their efforts. Where is the competition if it's just a display of work by the same people each time? May as well just have a Paintbox et al show and have done with it.

What it reminds me of is how Formula 1 racing became Ferrari/Schumacher show time. I have recently been informed that it is no longer the case in F1, but it makes the point.

this says it all as far as im concerned, it is the best vehical in the show! other vehicals may have wone there class which is fair enough but this vehical is voted better overall

who voted this best in show ? when i did shows the other competetors voted for there fellow competiters so if this is still the case then its fair enough i guess!
