Question MOT Certificate Number Question

Does anyone know if I can obtain the MOT certificate number for a vehicle I don't own? I have the vehicle's registration and chassis number.

The reason I'm interested in finding this info is that I'm trying to trace a VW that used to be in my family (I've tried all the usual ideas: VZi, DVLA etc). I know it's still on the road and so has an MOT. If I knew the MOT cert number I could use it and the registration on the MOT enquiry website to get the location where the vehicle was MOTed and then I could search like mad in that area

I will be very impressed if anyone can help me with this

You're not going to be able to do this. (I would imagine the Data protection act probably makes it impossible).
The only person who is going to be able to give you the MOT number is the person who owns the car. And you don't know who they are.

The only people who can search the DVLA database for this kind of information are the DVLA and the Police.

You can do a search on the DVLA website but all it will tell you is if the vehicle is registered.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

and motor insurance, loss adjusters! Also certain people in the motor trade can as well.

You can write a letter to the DVLA asking them to forward into onto the current owner of the vehicle.
You can get all the information of a vehicle from the DVLA but you do need the MOT cert and the V5C number as verification of ownership which is what you haven't got.

btw, pm the reg number.

edit that, presume it's the reg in your sig?

As far as i'm aware, you can contact the DVLA, pay a fee and get the owner details for cars.

Don't know what forms you need but you used to be able to di it.

:edit: Corrected as above

Are you sure you can actually get there name and address???????
Seems unlikely unless you can prove you have a valid reason.

not on current owners but you can for all past owners.
The DVLA will send you copies of all previous V5/V5C's for a small fee if you are the current owner.

The DVLA were very unhelpful. I wrote to them twice, the second time I enclosed a letter that they could pass on to the current owner and I stated that I respected the owners right to not reply if they didn't want to. I was very polite and explained my reasons but all I got back was a copy of the same generic letter that they sent me the first time.

It really annoys me that though the information I want is held by the DVLA, they won't even act as a third party (which would maintain the current owners privacy).

And in this case chances are the current owner would like to learn some of the history of their 35 year old campervan.

BTW, thanks for all the replies - even if it's bad news - at least now I know that the MOT idea is a dead end.
