What an odd experience...

Just took the Bug for a very short ride up to the petrol station and back.

On the driveway, the Bug was very grouchy and reluctant to start, and all the way down to the petrol station, power delivery was minimal, and the engine was popping and juddering at any speed and in any gear! It was like driving a constant flat spot. Couldn't get it above 40. I thought initially a HT kead had popped off, it was running as though it was on 3 cylinders. I checked when I got there, all four were attatched.

On the way BACK, everything had returned to normal. No pops or judders, and the engine had returned to its normal zingy sprightly self.

What could have caused this severe but temporary shite running?

Yep- crap in the fuel line is the most likely candidate. Make sure you have one of those disposable filters fitted between the pump and carb(s).

Crap or water in your petrol would have the same effect. B4 you go off one one the water i refer to is the rain type.
