I decided to pull out the original aircon unit to see if was any good. After pricing parts up on the net we found it was gonna be way to expensive to pick up all the missing parts so that's not going back in. Bloody good job too. It's huuuuge. I reckon we'll get an extra 4 mpg getting rid of all that weight
The bad news was that it also prompted me to investigate why plates had been put over the original air intakes and heavily sealed. Unfortunately, that's a common rotting place cos they're left bare metal from the factory and craply seam sealed.
This one was no exception
Priced up the parts and it was over £400 for the replacement panel before even shipping it from the states. There needed to be an alternative
This brings us to present day and the fantastic work done by A1y this weekend
Anyway, got Aly round to have a look and get his opinion on 'glassing it instead. Guaranteed no future rust along with being a whole lot cheaper
lol. Strength wise wouldn't be an issue due to all the metalwork around it and the fact that it wasn't there in the first place
So here we go...
I opened up the scuttle area so we could get access.
Not a lot in there. What you can't see is just behind the firewall the panel isn't connected at all
Trimmed some bits out with the plasma and then Aly started to re-create what used to be there (Note: the big air intake isn't going back in as we're not going to reuse the stock heater box setup.)
While we were at it I figured i'd put in a better drain system for getting the water & crap out hence the bit of PVC pipe sticking out the firewall
)
Then he whizzed his magic & turned it all solid again
Second layer on and it's sweet
no more rust either
Cheers again dude
Finally, cheers to Andy (Fbiiburton) for coming over and giving me a hand
rebuilding his calipers yesterday () sorting out the garage today. Back to an almost tidy setup and ready for the rest of the onslaught
