Mustang Resto - *** Pic Heavy ***

Figured I ought to put some pictures up to explain why the Mustang is on 4 axle stands on the drive

It started with a little bit of rust ...

... and some flaky paint

Ok, not really. It was due to the fact it had no power steering and Sal couldn't drive it along with an oil leak on the engine. Engine had to come out to fit the power steering so I figured i'd rebuild it as well at the same time

Let the dismantling commence.

Aaaarghh, my clean garage is getting taken over again

Ooops, that's gonna need cleaning and re-painting.

Everything was covered in a THICK coat of underseal and crap paint.

A couple of 'proper' exhausts for show

Did a quick repair to the battery tray area and then ripped it's beating heart out.

That was tight

It's a big-un

Started the engine strip down and rebuild but sadly didn't take many pictures

Next was on to the engine bay panels. The tops of them where the wings bolt on were mangled so (after i'd repaired the battery tray ) we decided to get new ones as they were cheap and do it properly

Forgot to take pics of the 1st one so here's the second chopped out and ready to be replaced.

Stitched into place

Looking good and a trial fit of the wing ends up ok. 2 down, 2 to go.

Those cleco pins are great for fitting panles Highly recommended

A bit more weld.

And 3 down.

Again, ooops, no picture of the last one

With the interior out a quick gander inside reveals yet more heartache
P.S. this bit here is where the rear leaf spring bolts to the chassis/shell.

After further inspection it seems the floors are also made up of 3 panels welded on top of each other

Time to strip out the back end.

It was at this point I tried to convince Sal that tubbing the Mustag would be a REALLY REALLY good idea

She said no and muttered something silly about wanting to keep a back seat or something

I said "Whatever !!" and promply cut out the floor saying she's got no seats now

It seems she holds all the cards and made me put a new one back in

The other side is ready to weld in now as well

I decided to pull out the original aircon unit to see if was any good. After pricing parts up on the net we found it was gonna be way to expensive to pick up all the missing parts so that's not going back in. Bloody good job too. It's huuuuge. I reckon we'll get an extra 4 mpg getting rid of all that weight

The bad news was that it also prompted me to investigate why plates had been put over the original air intakes and heavily sealed. Unfortunately, that's a common rotting place cos they're left bare metal from the factory and craply seam sealed.

This one was no exception

Priced up the parts and it was over £400 for the replacement panel before even shipping it from the states. There needed to be an alternative

This brings us to present day and the fantastic work done by A1y this weekend

Anyway, got Aly round to have a look and get his opinion on 'glassing it instead. Guaranteed no future rust along with being a whole lot cheaper lol. Strength wise wouldn't be an issue due to all the metalwork around it and the fact that it wasn't there in the first place

So here we go...

I opened up the scuttle area so we could get access.

Not a lot in there. What you can't see is just behind the firewall the panel isn't connected at all

Trimmed some bits out with the plasma and then Aly started to re-create what used to be there (Note: the big air intake isn't going back in as we're not going to reuse the stock heater box setup.)

While we were at it I figured i'd put in a better drain system for getting the water & crap out hence the bit of PVC pipe sticking out the firewall )

Then he whizzed his magic & turned it all solid again

Second layer on and it's sweet

no more rust either

Cheers again dude

Finally, cheers to Andy (Fbiiburton) for coming over and giving me a hand rebuilding his calipers yesterday () sorting out the garage today. Back to an almost tidy setup and ready for the rest of the onslaught
