Helloooo,
I have the chance of a type 4 engine that has been sat in a garage, unused for a couple of years and the guy just wants rid. It appears to be complete and the engine number begins with CU.
He claims that it was running in an old camper before he had it and he was going to shove it in his beetle but never got round to it, and i could use an engine for the on going money pit that is the buggy.

what do ya want to know? Spares are more expensive, but the engines are much stronger. cu code is a 2lt with hydraulic tappets and 70hp as stock. tappets can be an issue eseccially on an old engine as they can stick but if they are running sweet they make the engine queiter and no more adjusting the valve clearances.
However, its going to cost a little to get it to fit. Depending on the gearbx in the buggy, you'll need to locate a 215mm clutch and flywheel from a 1.7/1.8 type 4 engine, get it machined and pilot bearing pressed into it, pull the bearing out of the end of the crank and possibly grind out the bell housing of the gearbox slightly. Its also a good idea to fit a heavy duty gearbox release arm thing.
You'll then need to brace the gearbox and fabricate a rear engine supprt as the type 4's are alot heavier than a type 1. You'll also need to block off the fuel pump and fit a eleccy one as it fould the chassis.
Its a bit of work but will provide extra oomph bt mainy in the for of lots of torque. they respond well to fitting twin 40's!
To be honest, i'd get the engine and sell it on, it's not really suitable for a buggy as it'll weigh down the back end even more and you'd be better of with a quick revving type 1 engine - you just dont need much torque in a lghtwieght buggy!
It's a friend of a friend. He wants to sell it but we have yet to agree a price. I offered him £50 but you would think that i called him "fart knocker" the look he gave me.
Like you say i think it would be to much for a buggy, plus all the extra fannying to get it to fit.
I will see him on Saturday and i intend to take advantage of his probable drunken state and see if i can get a deffo price out of him. It maybe worth buying to keep in the shed till some thing else comes along.
