FIRE! please check your wiring

Happily riding along tonight to the snowdome to see if there was any dubs about after getting my bay back from the body shop yesterday, and my electrics started playing up.. First my stereo cut, then my generator light came on.. so i stopped to check the engine bay wasn't somkin' then arriving back, i saw smoke coming from the vent behind my speedo, went to the back of the van to get my extinguisher but as i turned round i was hit by a wall of smoke. Knowing my luck the extinguisher did not work! so i ran to the snowdome, shouting my tits off.. When i arrived back with an extingisher and several security guys i saw flames.. several expletives and a fire extinguisher later the van was relatively 'unhurt', yet in desperate need of a new wiring loom. The fire brigade came, took out my battery and inspected the cause, which happened to be chafing wires under my dash

So guys, just a quick warning..

CHECK YOUR WIRING LOOMS!

especially underneath the steering column

just gotta wait until the morning to inspect the damage

Not good. Hope the damage is limited to the loom.

I lost a car years back due to a fire that started in the loom. Was totally gutted and i now hate wiring bodges with a passion.

The original looms, although old are pretty good, but the spade connectors corrode and get weak leading to loose connections and vans especially seem to be particularly prone to owners bodging in additional wiring etc.

I had an "incident" on the motorway a few weeks back that turned out to be due to corroded spade connectors ........ could have been a hell of a lot worse Luckily Nige (Golf 130 off here) came and had a good look around for me and sorted everything out

I am sorry to hear that hun. I am having our bays wiring checked as we speak! I have had problems with the indicators and it turns out that all the people I have paid to do the wiring, have never actually solved the problem !
