Buggy fuel tanks

Noticed a few of em on evilbay have fuel tanks at the back (above the engine!) rather than at the front.

Is this not dodgy and something that should be avoided. Seems a bit too close to an engine fire, but somebody at work said that would be better in a front end collision. But not rear end.

They use the same ali cylinder tanks on a lot of the trikes too, never heard of anyone having any kind of catastrophe with them

I have sold at least a dozen of them through kingfishers, and trust me - i wouldn't sell them to a hairy arsed biker if i thought there was any chance of something going wrong with them

If anything, from a general maintainance point of view, it is gonna me much better to have the fuel tank mounted on the back (like on the buggys and trikes) cos at least then you can keep a real close eye on the fuel lines and it is gonna be a hell of a lot easier to spot a perished or leaking line.

But from a safetly point of view, a fuel tank is gonna be dangerous in a smash no matter where it is placed unfortunately

buggy fuel tank

i have deliberately placed the tank in my buggy at the front as due to a lack of body weight, buggys have very little grip on the front end, so the more weight between the front wheels the better, unless wheelies are your thing!!!

in my only big buggy crash the standard beetle fuel tank broke away and ended up away from the car dented and leaking from the outlet hose. but away from any electrics.

A tank inside the tub could in theory could allow vapour to collect on the floor from the breather. again never heard of any problems.
petrol is dangerous but using a fuel cell like racing cars use would improve safety in a accident.

Ah AHHH. An ambition fulfilled I know more than plum!

Actually on an early type 25 (82 aircooled...) the fuel tank is at the front.

Man that felt good.

Thanks for the advice guys, been avoiding the ones with the fuel tank on the back. You do lose a bit of storage space though, which you defo need when camping.
