GTI emissions HELP !!! MOT FAIL !!!

my turn to ask for help this time

My T4 has a golf 2.0l GTi engine. Dont no for sure which one - it was in when I got the van. Maybe an 8v from a Mk3 ?

here's a pic

I know , not a fat lot, about the GTi engine or how it ticks

the emissions were off the scale to say the least.

the CO should be under 0.200 and it was up at around 4.500 ish

so - apart from the obvious plugs / air filter etc etc how do I get the emissoins down ?

baring in mind, they are that far out I suspect a sensor or somthing similar

I dont think I have a GTi manual either

all help and advice muchly appreciated

Agree with the lambda sensor theory, they only have a life of about 60k miles

it could be another sensor somewhere is feeding back duff info and causing it to overfuel

Don't waste your money on a gsf lambda sensor - only fit for scrap. Very high fail rate. The last one my mate fitted lasted 3 days. Try oscotts . Also as it hasn't been out much recently give it a good run out on the way to the mot.

1st time its moved in about 6 weeks !

but, like I said - it was way out !

is there a way to test the lambda ? - or bypass it ? fool the ecu to thinking its there ?

problem is you dont know without retesting! No idea on the gunsons / similar testers!

I had the same problem with my mk3 2lt gti, replaced the lamda, the water sensor and eventually the cat, which fixed the problem.

First try is the water temp sender, it'll cause the engine to overfuel if duff (thinks the engine is cold all the time - choke mode). Then try the lamba & cat.

cheers rapid

I'll see if I can find / test the water sensor.

Found this Lambda site that others may be interested in

Just Lambda, Suppliers of Bosch and NTK lambda sensors including zirconia and titania sensors by post

I've learned somthing already ! should be able to at least see if my lambda is working before I replace it - or with a few resistors ,, mimic it

for now

if only I could get the van 'to' my garage , let alone 'in' it its cold out there

Just a thought, have you got a cat fitted at all? I know its the most expensive bit, but if its easy to split the exhaust and have a look at the cat it could save you alot of hassle, mine had totally disintigrated internally and was basically a big empty pipe
