Here we go, a little bit more work done.

Had to move the chassis out of the garage so I could turn it round and work on the other side. Thought i'd give it a quick display against the car at the same time.

looking good

Back in the garage after a quick loooooong tidy up. Turned it round and tacked on the other side front rail. Put a couple of temporary crossmembers in to make sure it all stayed parallel.

And that's where it's at now. Further down the line i'm going to be narrowing the rear end about another 7 1/2 inches, raising the height or the rear end frame and fitting the dropped crossmember

Did a spot more welding tonight

Put the front crossmember in.

Then came the 'bumper brackets'
Should provide a little support in the event of a front end smash
Oh, and give me somewhere to mount the rad

Finishing off a few of the hard to get to welds & the frame is pretty much done now.

Just gotta wait to get all the suspension stuff now. Might be able to make a start on trimming the body to fit & mounting the outriggers etc.

Nice work on that chassis mate.
Would love to do something similar to this on my splitty when its finished.
Got a lot of inspiration from this thread -
Beardmore Bros: Robin`s MX5 Powered Minor

Admittedly, it s a minor, but its still awesome.
Love the way the guy made it all out of wood first to get the proportions right.
Its a pisser about your garage.
I am trying to build my splitty on my drive and the weather is driving me mad.
I have also got a load of bits stored in a tiny council lockup and am paying £30 a month for it.
I've just been offered a lock up nearby measuring 10 metres x 10 metres for £240 a month to include all bills.
It s a pisser cos I really want it but cant justify, or find, £240 a month.
The other problem is that I could chip in with three or four others but then I'm back to square one with very little room to manouever. Ideally it needs just two cars in there.

Just curious, what box section are you using and how heavy will it be?
Also, are you using MIG or TIG on those joints?

It's 3"x2" box section .120" (3mm) sidewall. It's gonna end up heavy due to the whopping V8 in the front However, as it stands at the mo (Just the chassis framework) i'd say it's currently about the same as a bug floorpan minus running gear. Stood in the middle of the frame I can pick it up on my own. Not very elegant when moving it and trying to get it high enough to go on the table though

I'm mig'ing it all up and flitching all of the stress joints. Welding using a 150 amp welder with Argon Shield gas and on power 5 out of the 6

Tested the welding for penetration loads before I started just to make sure it was all ok.

I know the feeling about renting a place. By the time there's enough people to cover the cost it's only big enough for parking cars

Should have the parts for this through in the next few day (bar the rear axle)

• Mandrel bent 2” X 3” frame rails, .083” or .120”
• Four-link kit
• 4130 chrome moly rod ends
• Quick release drive shaft loop
• Bolt-On diagonal link
• Upper shock cross member
• Adjustable lower shock mounts
• Strange Engineering aluminum coil overs with springs

Comes as a kit so i've got to weld it all up etc. but it gives me the extra height I need on the rear end and I can narrow it to suit. Take all the guesswork out of making the 4-link setup as well seeing as it's the first time i've ever messed with one

Just read that page. It's quite a cool workthrough and give plenty of ideas on how to tackle bits. Nowt wrong with Moggies either
