T2 camper horn insulation

Hello - can anyone give me some advice?
I have a T2 camper (1977), and the horn sounds when I take a left turn. I understand it's not an uncommon problem, and relates to the earthing insulation of the steering column tube. It looks fairly straightforward to remove the steering wheel and tube (according to Haynes guide). Can anyone give me any advice on how to go about fis=xing the problem, pitfalls, etc?
Thanks
MA

its usually caused by the plastic insulator at the bottom of the column coming out of the retaiing flange at the bottom or the earthing wire snagging on the flexi coupling bolts

Thanks 67splitty. I'll look at that. I'm having a bit of trouble getting into the column tube. Assume I need to remove the indicator switching and casing. Any tips anyone? Also found that the indicator switch mechanism is loose because one of the retaining screws is missing and the two screws on the side adjacent to the indicator arm are not fixing- worn threads? - I'm not sure what these locate into as haven't managed to get the casing off to see. When the indicator arm is pulled forward to flash / full beam, the whole switch mechanism moves upwards due to the screws not fixing it down. I wonder it this might be why the horn is shorting, as I did use the flash just before it started, and the horn sounds when I turn the wheel to the left.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

When you finaly get the switch gear off, you will find they locate in slots in the column, people tighten em up when there not lined up and bend the tags out the way but you should easily be able to straighten em. if the switch gear has slid up, it may be shorting to the steering wheel. You may need longer bolts if they have stripped em too!

Could also be the plastic spacer ring under the spring under the steering wheel, ours dissintegrated and made it beep if you put a bit of loading on the wheel. Not available any more but Bluebird do a replacement bush you drift in to get rid of any play

Thanks again 67splitty. I've manged to get good fixings for three of the screws, so it's much tighter. Don't know if that's fixed the problem - I'll take it out of the garage and do a few left turns when it stops raining!
